The team were in early the next morning, and as Entwistle handed around hot drinks, Phillips updated them on the details of her call with Townsend the previous night.

‘So, realistically, where could he be getting the information from?’ Jones asked as he removed the lid from his steaming peppermint tea.

‘That’s what we need to figure out,’ replied Phillips, taking a sip of her coffee as Entwistle sat at his desk. ‘Who in the chain of arrest had access to that information?’

‘Us four,’ replied Bovalino, ‘plus the uniform team, forensics and the custody crew.’

‘Which uniformed guys picked him up at the school?’ asked Jones.

Bovalino checked his notes. ‘Jennings and Hussain.’

‘And what about forensics?’ Jones added. ‘Who was at the Heppingstall house for the search?’

‘Clara, Aziz and Frankie. And me of course. I was there too.’

Phillips nodded. ‘And who were the custody officers yesterday?’

‘Walsh, Ali and Benson,’ Entwistle cut in.

‘Any of them on your list of potential moles?’ said Phillips.

‘Give me a sec, and I’ll check.’ Entwistle scanned the list of people connected to the previous investigations that Townsend had managed to source sensitive information on. ‘From a forensic point of view, Clara and Aziz.’ He scanned further down the list. ‘And we’re looking at Sergeant Walsh and Ali in the custody team.’

Phillips took another sip of coffee as she considered if any of those names were likely mole suspects. The truth was, she had no idea; and, without a good reason, there was little chance of being able to officially investigate any of them either.

Just then, Evans’s name appeared on-screen as her phone began to ring. Picking it up, she made her way into her office before answering, ‘Andy, I’m hoping you’ve got good news for me.’

‘I do, as it goes. We have a clear match on the knife.’

‘Really? That’s brilliant.’

‘Nixon’s DNA was all over it, along with Heppingstall’s. There’s little doubt it was used in the knife attack. Plus, we found traces of the boy’s DNA on Nixon’s suit jacket.’

Phillips held her breath in silent hope.

‘And there’s more.’

‘Go on.’

‘We’ve also matched the shoe print left at the scene to the trainers you took from Heppingstall. Size thirteen, Nike Court Vision Low Next To Nature.’

‘We’ve got him.’ Phillips clenched her fist and punched the air in triumph. ‘Not even Collins could refute that kind of evidence.’

‘Collins?’ Evans asked. ‘Who’s Collins?’

‘Never mind. This is first-rate work, Andy, first rate.’

‘We always aim to please in forensics.’

‘Yeah, well, you’ve really come up trumps this time.’ She paused before continuing, ‘By the way, Andy, who in your team was aware the suspect was a student at St Bart’s during the testing process for the knife and trainer print?’

‘Why do you ask?’

‘No reason, really, just wondering.’

‘All of us, actually. It’s not usually the case, but because of the house search, it came up. The school photos on the wall gave it away.’

‘So you, Aziz, Clara and Frankie?’

‘That’s right.’

‘Okay, thanks.’

‘Is anything wrong?’ Evans asked.

‘No, no, not at all,’ Phillips lied. ‘It’s all good. In fact, it’s more than good.
